The Tesla Model X will be available to Chinese buyers in 2020, marking the first time an American-made electric vehicle has entered the Chinese market, a key element in the country’s quest to transform itself from an economy of the past into one of the world’s largest producers of electric vehicles.
China is already the world leader in the development of electric cars, and the Model 3 marks the start of a new era of investment in EVs that will eventually give Chinese automakers a competitive edge against the U.S. and Europe.
While the Model X is the first American-produced car in the world to enter China, there are hundreds of other electric vehicles in production and many are sold in the U., Canada, and Japan.
The Model 3 will be the first to enter the Chinese marketplace from Tesla, which is also developing its own vehicle, the Model Y.
The Model 3 is expected to begin deliveries in 2020 and will have a base price of $35,000.
It will be produced by Tesla in Nevada, with assembly slated to begin in the third quarter of 2020.
Tesla is also building a network of manufacturing facilities in China that will enable it to increase production capacity from 1,200 vehicles per day to 2,000 vehicles per week by 2020, said Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla.
The company has also built a factory in China and is expected soon to begin exporting the Model S sedan to the country.
Tesla plans to use those production lines to make the Model Model 3 sedan.

The new car, which starts at $34,500, has the same specifications as the previous model but includes new safety features like a collision-avoidance system, rear camera, and driver-assistance system, according to Tesla.
The company has a large lineup of models in the Model 2 and 3 line-ups, including the Model A, A+, X, XS, XR, XC, and X.
While Tesla’s production capacity in China has increased by 200,000 units a day, the company said it has invested more than $1 billion in new equipment and infrastructure to ensure the quality of its products and manufacturing process.
The first Tesla Model 4 will be unveiled at the company’s annual shareholder meeting in May, which will be followed by a Model 3 debut at the Tokyo Motor Show in October.
Tesla also plans to release a smaller Model 3 in 2020 that will sell for around $15,000 and will include a battery pack that will be smaller than the Model 4.
The Chinese market has been growing rapidly and demand for EVs has been increasing, especially as China’s population ages.
The U.K. and France have announced plans to export EVs to China.
